Dear Busy Parent,

Your children really can learn to do chores, even extra chores, without you resorting to bribes, payments or yelling. No, I am not kidding!

You know how it is … You come home to find the house a mess, backpacks in front of the door, the kids are screaming at each other, clothes strewn everywhere, dirty dishes in the family room, more dirty dishes on the kitchen table. And the moment you ask for help, a bigger screaming match breaks out. As usual, no one takes responsibility for the problem, and everyone waits for you to step in to fix it.

Daily family life is reduced to tears, yelling, and bribes to get
kids to help around the house.

You tell yourself you will make sure they help next time. But this time, it was just easier to do it yourself.

You know your children need to be responsible and self-sufficient, but life happens. You want your children to take charge of their belongings, and take more pride in their home, but that seems like a pipe dream. You vow to develop a system, but instead you say to yourself “I’ll get around to it later.”

I was once where you are now.
Maybe you can relate to my story.

In 2003, I was a full-time working mom to six-year-old, Anna, when I traveled to Russia again to adopt my second daughter, Alena, then age three-and-a-half. WOW, did our lives turn upside down after Alena joined our family. I had to start from scratch to teach Alena even basic hygiene and life skills for which she had never been exposed. I arranged a leave from work and immersed myself in training my daughter how to live in a family and how to behave in various situations. I used to say to myself, “How did it get so hard? What am I doing wrong?” Each day I felt like I was running in circles, losing ground, and losing control. What a challenging and intense time that was for all of us.

They say that “necessity is the mother
of invention.” It surely was for me!

As an Organizing Consultant, I was accustomed to creating systems for clients every day. If I could help families and high-powered corporate executives to be more productive and lead a clutter-free life, then I was not going to be conquered by a preschooler. But the reality was that our family life was in crisis, and I desperately needed to find a solution!

I searched high and low, spent loads of time and money and I tried everything under the sun … charts, lists, chore games … but it was all so much work and nothing seemed to work for long.

Each system we tried had some positive features, but none offered a complete system that …

  • guided my kids to take ownership of their fair share
  • clearly communicated what was expected of them
  • showed me how to fairly assign chores based on age
  • didn’t take up lots of space like huge wall charts
  • worked for both my kids of different ages
  • was customizable
  • would grow with them as they matured

So I designed our own complete family chore system, that is like nothing I was able to find on the market. I drew on years of working with families as a professional organizer, as well as my experiences as a parent of two, and incorporated the best of expert’s knowledge in parenting, developing family values, organizing and age-appropriate chore development guidelines. The results have been incredible!

My children’s attitude and
confidence soared. Honestly, they are
happier children, and it shows!

Other moms noticed and
wondered how I did it!

Mom, Can I Help Around the House? A Simple, Step-by-step System for Teaching Your Children Life-long Skills for Pitching in and Picking up

I began sharing my system with other moms, and they experienced the same positive transformation in their homes and with their families. I documented and tested this empowering system for my organizing clients.

WOW! This is exactly what we needed to develop a chore system in our home. We had tried various other methods, but none offered a comprehensive package that included all the important elements. Janet thought of everything with the “Mom, Can I Help Around the House” system.

Our family is involved in lots of activities. With this system in place, I feel more freedom to fully participate, knowing that I have a plan in place to tackle our home maintenance tasks. Our household now has more structure and with far less conflict and stress over how to get it all done.

My boys love contributing and are even anxious to take on more chores that they see on the list. Being a part of the family and helping with chores is a definite character builder, and I realize now that they were capable of so much more. It just took the right system to empower us!

Thank you, Janet!

Let me share with you one lesson
I’ve learned in my many years as an
Organizing Consultant and parent …

You cannot truly gain control of your home and achieve
an organized lifestyle if your children are a part of the
problem and not an active and consistent part of the solution.

I wish I had this book 10 years ago! I can’t count the number of parents who have complained to me about their children and chores.

Chores are a major source of stress in even the happiest of families. When I provided therapy for children, I wished I had a resource like ‘Mom, Can I Help Around the House?’ Parents need answers and a method to follow to motivate their children for good behavior. Janet Nusbaum’s ‘Mom, Can I Help Around the House?’ system provides answers for distraught parents. Janet’s no-nonsense approach leads to calmer homes, decreased conflict, and most importantly, a feeling of responsibility and confidence in your children. I have worked with literally hundreds of children in my career and often wished that their parents had tools like this to teach them confidence and responsibility.

If you want help teaching your children critical life skills like responsibility, self-sufficiency, confidence, teamwork, and self-discipline, then you owe it to yourself and your children to get the ‘Mom, can I help around the House?’ system.

Janet's daughter washing dishesYou didn’t learn to bake without a recipe, and you no longer have to try to teach your children home responsibilities without a recipe, or a “How-to” guide. The days of arguing, nagging, yelling, and bribing can soon be a thing of the past.

With Mom, Can I Help Around The House? A Simple Step-by-Step System for Teaching Life-long Skills for Pitching in and Picking up, you will learn step-by-step methods and instructions for teaching your children how to take part in household chores without whining or battles.

Frustration and confusion melt away, and are replaced by consistent habits, routines, structure and harmony, where everyone pitches in.

But that’s just one of the benefits of this stress-reducing system. The parent workbook provides the foundation, but the significant changes occur when your children begin using their chore binder and take ownership for their household responsibilities.

Our hand-held “In My Family Everyone Works Together” chore binder contains a comprehensive inventory of more than 80 common household chore cards. It’s just like your children having their own mini-planner and instruction manual for every household task. (TIP …. You can use the master task inventory tool to plan your own chores!)

Imagine how different your household can be…

Imagine … your child coming to you and saying, “Mom, before
I go play, is there anything I can do to help?”

Imagine …. coming home to a clean house…

…. a school day morning where your children get up and
       immediately make their beds…

…. a Saturday morning where your children take the initiative
       and start the laundry …

…. your toddler picks up his or her own toys without being
            asked…

…. your preschooler gets out a cloth and dusts – and does a
           great job!

…. your elementary child brings you her assignment notebook
to be signed and suggests a plan to accomplish her
            art project due next week.

… your teen takes out the trash, loads and unloads the
dishwasher and vacuums … without being asked…

“Janet has been helping my family get organized most of this year, so I was thrilled to learn that she created a system for teaching my children to contribute at home. It was such a time-saver to have a system that was already created, tested by a professional organizer and by other moms, rather than trying to create a system for our family from scratch.”

~ Laura Biddle-Bruckman, Carmel, Ind.
